Impact

Researchers have easy access to cloud and Grid resources using this
implementation. They do not need to worry about GridFTP itself, but
rather use GOTransfer for transferring their files to our cloud
environment.

Description

Setting up GridFTP is not a trivial task, thus a
researcher should be alleviated of this task. A cloud installation has been deployed, where researches get their Linux VM within a minute, with instant access to GridFTP via either GlobusOnline (we will also show a mobile version of GlobusOnline) or a native GridFTP Client. One of the use cases in the Cloud-Environment is the 'dotplot' application. This is an application that does genome comparisons. Serialized genomes can be very data intensive, and thus it is an ideal application for GridFTP.

Summary

RISC Software is running an IBM CloudBurst instance which is enabled for GRID Usage.

A storage server has been set up which is accessible through GridFTP and MyProxy, and also enabled for GlobusOnline usage. This server exports its data storage, and cloud instances (virtual machines) can access this storage.
Special cloud images are, once deployed, automatically hooked into the authentication infrastructure and can mount the exported data share from the fileserver. This means that the cloud users are provided with an easy way to access their data via GridFTP and GlobusOnline without going through the hassle of setting this up themselves. We will also show a free and mobile version of GOTransfer, available in the Android Market.
