Description

Terry Hewitt is an independent consultant with extensive experience in programming and supporting researchers, scientists and engineers, particularly in supercomputing, data and visualization. In the late 1980s he established one of the first parallel processing services at the University of Manchester and since then he acquired responsibility for the development of high-end computing and high performance visualization services. He has been active in the development of e-Science, including the establishment of the UK National Grid Service and the UK Access Grid Support Centre. He is a Honorary Professor of Computer Science at Bangor University.

Summary

This talk will present a brief history of UMRCC, MCC, MC and IT Services at the University of Manchester, with a particular focus on high performance computing and grid computing.
It will start with the Flowers Report of the late 1960s, and review the evolution of the roles and responsibilities of a computer centre in a University, illustrating the move from innovation in IT services and support for academic computing to the commoditization of such services.
