Session Virtual Research Environments, gateways and workflow engines (Track Leaders: J. Montagnat, G. Sipos) DIRAC Virtual Research Environment pilot for EGI

Speaker

Dr Ricardo Graciani Diaz (University of Barcelona)

Description

This session is to be dedicated to report on activities related to the "DIRAC 4 EGI pilot service installation". DIRAC pilot for EGI is a prototype for a full scale DIRAC installation of an open Virtual Research Environment (VRE) service for any interested research community (or individual researchers) requiring access to distributed e-Infrastructure (grid, cloud or others). The pilot, operating since January 2014, with an increasing number of selected communities, will be opened to a wider target audience after this meeting. At least 3 different topics should be covered in the reports: - Setup of the service (Hosting, Operation,...) - its integration in EGI production structure (Accounting, Monitoring, ...) - experience from the communities

Description of work

Setup of the service, integration into EGI production structure and interaction with communities to incorporate them, making sure that their use case and needs are properly supported and taken into account.

The pilot communities:
iMarine (contact: Pasquale Pagano, NGI-Italy)
Auger (contact: Gines Rubio, CAFPE-GRANADA)
WeNMR (contact: Alexandre Bonvin, Utrecht University)
Engineering. Grupos de Ingenieria (contact: Ignacio Blanquer: UPV)
EISCAT (contact: TBD)
GRNET VOs (contact: Kostas Koumantaros, GRNET)

Wider impact and conclusions

The aim of the pilot is to serve as prototype of a full scale DIRAC service for EGI. The experience with this prototype will be the base for a H2020 proposal (EINFRA-9-2015) for the deployment of an open VRE service for any interested research community requiring access to distributed e-Infrastructure. The service will provide connection with existing Science Gateway solutions and other application/domain specific VREs, as well as DIRAC interactive portal with ad-hoc extensions when appropriated.
