We present the activities of ELIXIRITA, a Joint Research Unit coordinated by the National Research Council (CNR) that currently includes 13 partners, among which several Universities and High Performance Computing (HPC) providers. ELIXIRITA is an observer Node of the European consortium ELIXIR. ELIXIR unites Europe’s leading life science organizations in managing and safeguarding the massive amounts of biological data being generated every day by publicly funded research. The main ambition of ELIXIRITA is to stimulate and assist the development, rationalization and integration of bioinformatics research in Italy, and to transfer the benefits of all these activities to the European partners and in particular to other ELIXIR Nodes, towards the achievement of a pan-european bioinformatics infrastructure able to cope with the present and future technological challenges posed by life sciences. In the first two years of its activity ELIXIRITA has been focused on developing a collaborative and fertile environment for its members, that include most of Italian bioinformatic centers and HPC providers, improving cooperation and resource sharing among our partners and between them and the rest of the ELIXIR consortium. ELIXIRITA is involved in threeH2020 projects recently funded, has contributed to the development of the ELIXIR Service Registry, with more than 130 services run by ELIXIRITA members and is going to set up a comprehensive training program together with its European partners in the framework of theELIXIREXCELERATEINFRADEV3 project.
