Description

This last year GEANT, the pan-European research and education network, and NKN (National Knowledge Network), a state-of-the-art pan-India network for research and education, organised the first-ever programme called Enlighten Your Research - India2Europe (EYR-India2Europe) (more information can be found at: https://www.geant.org/News_and_Events/Pages/Enlighten-Your-Research-India2Europe.aspx), which had the goal of inspiring new and understanding existing collaborations between India and Europe. The programme provides access and support for network, compute, and storage resources depending on the project’s request, to meet the growing needs of the research proposal. While there have been many versions of Enlighten Your Research programmes over the years, each iteration of the programme has offered different resources to the researchers based on the needs of the research communities. For example, when the first EYR programme was launched in 2007, researchers were offered point-to-point circuits through SURFnet which provided reserved bandwidth for their research project. Now, we are again seeing another shift in the needs of the research communities. We see there are more increasing needs for programmers who can write algorithms to process the data for a given research group, and the desire to use cloud resources for the storage and compute requirements. In this 15 min presentation, we would like to present the two winning projects for EYR-India2Europe: - COCOSIM: Cloud Crop Simulation, which uses weather data in cloud infrastructures to run crop simulation models. - Orchestrating High Performance Computing (HPC) Based Web Services for Rapid Analytics: A Framework for Disaster Monitoring; which addresses the issue of a rapid response system for disasters by orchestration of relevant standardized domain specific web services in a high performance computing environment. These two project proposals require the coordination and cooperation with cloud infrastructure resources for storage and compute. This presentation will discuss some of the solutions to supporting this research from a holistic e-infrastructure view and what the desired outcomes are for the researchers and supporting future projects, in addition to coupling the support of these projects with commercial providers.

Summary

To help inspire and understand existing collaborations between researchers in India and Europe, GEANT and NKN organised a programme called Enlighten Your Research - India2Europe, where two projects were chosen to provide cloud infrastructure resources in addition to acquiring data from repositories or collections in Europe. The EYR-India2Europe programme brings together e-infrastructure solutions for the accepted projects to help accelerate and enable their research. This presentation will discuss the projects, the architected solutions across the e-infrastructures, and the changing cross-domain requirements that are needed by the research communities.
