They say you can’t have it all, but what if we tell you that they are wrong and you can! The University of Groningen is an university that’s coming up with solutions that will most certainly blow your mind, because we want it all. We have a progressive IT department that engineers solutions which will make you scratch your head due to the sheer genius of their simplicity. When we talk about research you probably think of big dedicated HPC solutions which cost a lot of money, but what do you think when we tell you these are not always needed? What if you can combine your mission critical 24/7 server virtualisation infrastructure with HPC? At the University of Groningen we are combining our HPC GPU platform with our server virtualisation platform to create one universal platform, thus dissolving traditional boundaries. A platform with lots of GPU’s spread across three of our data centers, which is possible by using today's technology in a new and exciting way. Because the workload characteristics of server virtualisation and HPC differ a great deal, combining them into one platform will utilize the hardware much more efficiently. Our mission critical platform is scaled in a way to allow the outage of one of our data centers. In our case this means we have at least a third of our hardware doing nothing by design. For HPC however more is better, this means that even if we can't rely on availability one hundred percent, we can utilize the overcapacity, taking the risks for a possible outage for granted. By virtualisation of HPC GPUs we are able to make better use of the resources, and we gain a lot of flexibility. For example, apart from AI and machine learning, we can temporarily give a virtual research workspace the power of GPU acceleration, which enables our researchers to work interactive. All in all this technology driven idea can make HPC resources a great deal cheaper to realise. The benefits for the researcher are clear, cheaper solutions with much more flexibility, as we can integrate this solution directly with our dedicated HPC cluster, our federated HPC cloud and our research workspace.
