More about Catania
Catania is Sicily’s second largest city, with a population of around 300,000. Catania has a rich culture and history, hosting many museums, restaurants, churches, parks and theatres and it’s very well known for its street food.
Mount Etna dominates the landscape and is ever-present in the inhabitants' lives here, even so far as to shape the history of Catania. Volcanic eruptions destroyed the city on several occasions, the most devastating of which happened in the 17th Century and it was followed by a strong earthquake some years later. One remarkable consequence of these events was that the entire old town of Catania was rebuilt in Baroque style, with large, wide open squares and avenues using lava as building material. The silent Etna remains its icon and looms over the city.
Catania is a delightful city with its Baroque centre, amazing food and vibrant nightlife. Piazza Duomo is Catania’s focal point, where you’ll find the Cattedrale di Sant' Agata and the Fontana dell'Elefante, a memorable fountain featuring Liotru, the smiling elephant. The city is definitely a must for all gourmets and food lovers. The restaurants in Catania are famous for their fresh fish prepared in several different ways and Pasta alla Norma is a must - a classic pasta dish in Catania that has become one of Sicily's symbolic recipes.
