A Generic Research Data Infrastructure (GeRDI) in the context of EOSC

The German project GeRDI is implementing a Generic Research Data Infrastructure with data find-ability and accessibility services, and in doing so is supporting the development of an Internet of FAIR Data and Services. As such, it is a contribution to the implementation of the EOSC as called for by the High Level Expert Group on the EOSC in their report (Mons, Tochtermann et.al., 2016) and may serve as the infrastructure part of a GO FAIR implementation network. The presentation will outline how GeRDI addresses some of the thematic building blocks of the EOSC and it is intended to initiate fruitful exchange with other similar initiatives, existing or planned. Target audience are representatives of other projects in this space as well as policy proponents of EOSC interested in seeing some early concrete developments. The central focus of GeRDI initially is on developing a meta-search engine that operates across diverse research data repositories, embracing the reality of an ecosystem of infrastructures and aiming to bring them into the data infrastructure commons by improving find-ability and accessibility of siloed data. The system is in the early implementation phase, with system architecture definition and prototype software development proceeding with the cooperation of several volunteer research communities using their real-world use cases. GeRDI is intended to serve not only as a data search engine for researchers but will be developed into a holistic tool for the growing community of data stewards. This will be achieved by extending the find-ability and accessibility aspects into a research data lifecycle management environment that supports interoperability and reuse by interfacing with data analysis and publishing functions through a user interface as well as programming interfaces. In contrast to similar developments for established data-intensive research fields (such as the Helmholtz Data Federation – HDF), GeRDI aims to be open to all disciplines including the long tail of science.
