Topics

 1. Possible extension of the EGI-Engage project period

- EGI Foundation is discussing about extending the EGI-Engage project until the end of 2017
- Elixir CC project was planned to finish in the end of February 2017. The competence center could be extended too ( the amount of allocated resources will not be increased)

 Conclusions:
  1. Extending the EGI-Engage to the end of 2017 was supported.
  2. Elixir CC managers present in the meeting agreed that we should ask that Elixir CC will be extended for 4-6 months (until the end of June or August 2017). The actual extension will be refined later on.

Comments will be asked form the EMBL-EBI and CRNS node managers (Stephen Newhouse and Christophe Blanchet) that were not present in the meeting.

(Positive response for extending the Elixir CC was obtained from Stephen Newhouse and Christophe Blanchet few fays after the meeting)

 2. Effort statistics

Status of used PMs in the end of September 2016.

Node Planned Used
P06: CESNET 6 1.15 19%
P10: CSC 6 2.34 39%
P11: CNRS 4 0.11 3%
P13: GRNET 2.7 0.52 19%
P21: SURFsara BV 1.3 0.20 15%
P30: EMBL 3.3 0.37 11%

- plenty of PMs still unused in all sites.
- Extension of Elixir CC will allow more effective usage of the remaining PMs.

 3. Elixir CC article in EGI newsletter

- Writing article for EGI newsletter is not reasonable at the moment.
- article should be written later on once the use cases have preliminary results available.

 4. ELIXIR compute platform
 (Gergely reporting)

4.1 Getting certification for the Elixir sites in EGI
   - easier certification procedure is planned for the sites that join EGI through Elixir.
   - Elixir operation center in EBI will be in charge of certification of Elixir sites
   - Gergely and Steven are writing a documentation about this.

   4.2 Elixir VO
    - VO registration is not yet operational (notifications are not deliver to VO manager)
    - Guide how to port VM to Elixir VO will be released soon

4.3 EGI Federated Cloud f2f meeting will be held in Amsterdam on November 29th-30th

 5. Use case status reports

5.1  cBioPortal replication (Miroslav Ruda)
- no news
- cBioPortal is running but the users are not using it at the moment

5.2  Marine metagenomics (Kimmo Mattila)
- currently testing the tool that launches the virtual cluster environment of MetaPipe pipeline
- at the moment the tool work only in the OpenStack cloud of CSC.
- CESNET studies the possibility to run the tool in their own cloud environment.
- Current plan in CESNET is to write a script that constructs the cluster using Terraform and Ansible

5.3  Insyght Comparative Genomics (Mohamed Berdi)

-insyght Comprative genomics VM is now available in the AppDB (https://appdb.egi.eu/store/vappliance/bacterial.genomics.1.3)

- VM is waiting for endorsement (Elixir VO or FedCloud VO:s could be used for this).
- next step is to launch the application in cluster mode

5.4 PhenoMeNal project (Dario Vianello)

 - Settling down on the stack to be used to deploy a Kubernetes cluster. EBI is interacting with them to establish what’s the best way to package the Phenomenal cloud in order to be deployable from our cloud portal.

- They’re using AppDB to store the base VM images they use to deploy their infrastructure, but they’re currently limited by the lack of support AppDB has for docker containers. The issue has been temporarily solved hosting their own Docker Hub and placing some middleware in between to store Docker specific metadata that can’t be stored in AppDB.

5.5  JetStream interoperability (Robert Quick)
   -not present

 6. Suggestions for Flashtalks and Workshops in the ELIXIR All Hands 2017

Elixir is requesting Flash talk and workshop prposals for the Elixir all hands meeting that will be held on March 21.-23. in ROME (https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/elixir-2017-all-hands-meeting-registration-26424273714)

- Tommi will check with EXCELERATE WP4 management if there is going to be an Elixir Compute Platform  workshop (similarly to the previous AHM) and if it is possible to include the ELIXIR CC in this.
- The most mature CC use cases (3) suggest their use cases for flash talks (Marine metagenomics by CSC and CESNET, Insyght by CNRS, Phenomenal by EBI)
- Gergely submitted two flash talk suggestions about file transfer-related technologies (Tommi Nyronen said is a hot topic now in ELIXIR):
     * EGI Data Hub and Open Data Platform (by Matthew or Gergely)
     * File Transfer Service (FTS3) (by Peter or Gergely)
