Impact

ELIXIR is the largest ESFRI infrastructure with the potentially highest need of the distributed compute and data processing. EGI ELIXIR VT, with representatives from 13 countries, is the first step towards coordinated collaboration between EGI and ELIXIR. The VT results can serve as a basis for drafting a new approach to such a collaboration, based on clear knowledge about the status at the national level and creating a wide social network of people already involved or with interest to become involved in the ELIXIR/e-infrastructure (EGI) collaboration at both technical and organizational levels.

Description

ELIXIR is a large pan-European ESFRI project for life science research support, in particular aimed for handling genomics and related bioinformatics data. The rate of production new data is fast increasing, as new technologies are coming more available to large number of research laboratories through Europe and elsewhere. The collection, duration, storage, archiving, integration and processing of large amounts of these biomolecular data is a challenge that cannot be handled by a single organization or by one country alone, but requires international coordination.
EGI ELIXIR VT is focused on establishing a social network of people working in the e-infrastructure area and having strong relationship with their national ELIXIR counterparts. ELIXIR VT is collecting data about ELIXIR/e-infrastructure relationship status in individual European and other countries. Representatives from 13 countries – Armenia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom – are currently participating in the ELIXIR VT activities. The goal of ELIXIR VT is to collect, share and document experiences and ideas about ELIXIR/e-infrastructure relationship in individual countries, starting with those with members in the ELIXIR VT. The information collected through relates roughly to the following areas: 1) How is ELIXIR project coordinated and organized at the national level? 2) Which national e-infrastructure and bioinformatics organizations (e.g. NGI, NREN, universities, research institutes) are involved? 3) What kind (if any) of relationship exists between national e-infrastructures and ELIXIR? 4) What are the national ELIXIR topics and their IT needs and issues? 5) Who are the official national ELIXIR contacts?
Based on collected information about national ELIXIR's IT situations, we will summarize the coordination, experience and issues of European and other countries. In the second part of the presentation we will present a preliminary draft proposal for the coordinated approach between ELIXIR and e-infrastructures.

Summary

ELIXIR is an ESFRI project for life science research support focused on handling large amount of bioinformatics data. EGI ELIXIR VT is establishing a social network ELIXIR related people working in e-intrastructures and is collecting information about ELIXIR/e-infrastructure relationship status in individual European and other countries. ELIXIR VT currently includes representatives from 13 countries. The information collected relates roughly to the areas of coordination, organization, involved institutions, ELIXIR contacts, ELIXIR topics and e-infrastructure needs at the national level. We will summarize collected information and present a draft proposal for the coordinated approach between ELIXIR and e-infrastructures.
