Description

Military attacks on Ukraine starting in February 2022 have caused immense destruction and human suffering and have led to a refugee crisis in Europe. Research infrastructures and the Ukrainian data centres are no exception; the war caused loss and destruction also to the technical infrastructures in the EGI Federation.

Many scientists and researchers are among the millions of Ukrainians who have fled their country. Sergiy Svistunov from the Ukrainian Grid Infrastructure is not one of them. He stayed in Ukraine, determined to keep the infrastructure services up and running, deeply committed to science and his country’s independence.

We will meet Sergiy Svistunov, a Ukrainian representative in the EGI Council, who will tell us how the digital infrastructures supporting research in the country have been coping during the past months of the war. With Sergiy, we will discuss how we can join our forces to support the local research community and the restoration of the computing facilities that were lost during the past months of the war.

The session will be split into two parts:
A Q&A part, where participants can directly ask Sergiy, who will share his experiences and provide insights into the current situation, and
A Discussion on how we can support the rebuilding effort and ensure the continuity of Ukraine's science as well as the well-being of our colleagues.

Conveners: Magdalen Brus and Tiziana Ferrari
