Description of the Work
The SIENA Roadmap on Grid and Cloud Standards for e-Science and Beyond is the legacy of the EC-funded SIENA project which supports Europe’s Distributed Computing Infrastructure (DCI) initiatives and the European Commission in working towards the delivery of a future e-Infrastructures roadmap aligned with the needs of European and national initiatives.
The purpose of the roadmap is to create a common vision for the future evolution of the electronic infrastructures supporting European research, and to promote the creation of an integrated standards-based, interoperable European e-infrastructure.
This builds upon the assets (software, knowledge, best practices, policies and capabilities) of the six
European distributed computing infrastructures (DCIs) to provide value to stakeholders in research,
government and industry.
The roadmap has been fully supported by the SIENA Roadmap Editorial Board (REB) which includes representatives from each of the DCI projects (EGI, EDGI, EMI, EGI, StratusLab and VENUS-C). Standards initiatives such as OGF, IEEE, OASIS, SNIA, DMTF are also represented on the REB and have contributed fully to the Roadmap.
Conclusions
The workshop will offer participants an overview of a number of activities within the SIENA project such as recommendations coming from the SIENA Roadmap, findings from the Cloudscape IV workshop, and results from a SIENA perspective on the collaboration with DCIs and SDOs in developing a cloud standards profile.
Impact
The Roadmap is central to the objectives of the SIENA project. The activity lays out a clear vision of how Europe can gain from an interoperable ecosystem for Cloud and Grid Computing by leveraging the assets and capacities of the six DCIs, resulting in tangible benefits across research, public services and enterprise. This ambitious roadmap has the opportunity to influence developments in Europe in the project area helping Europe to be competitive in the areas of research, industry and eGovernment.
Furthermore,several DCIs are developing virtualized environments for the delivery of computational resources to the user communities. Achieving interoperability between these individual deployments is becoming an increasingly important issue in order to give to the users the ability to use resources provided by different domains and to avoid provider lock-in. A set of interfaces are required to be constrained to clearly defined specifications, while allowing individual infrastructures to deploy the middleware that they wish. One of the main activities of SIENA is to support the development of the EGI.eu led and OGF ratified set of cloud profiles as developed through the collaboration of the EGI virtualisation task force, the OGF DCI Federation Working Group and the other collaborating DCIs. Information on this is also being collected and contributed to the SIENA Roadmap.

The assets and capacities of Europe’s Distributed Computing Infrastructures (DCI) can bring value-added services within the context of the Digital Agenda for Europe (EU2020) and empowering the broadest possible set of researchers.
This workshop presents the recommendations of the SIENA Roadmap on Grid and Cloud Standards for e-Science and Beyond as as discussions following Cloudscape IV which looked to continue the dialogue between public sector officials, industry and SDOs over the deployment of cloud based services for the scientific community and public procurement.
The workshop will focus on the work of the DCI projects in advancing the standards landscape and in particular with regard to the adoption of cloud standards such as OCCI, CDMI and OVF.
The workshop will include presentations from members of the Roadmap Editorial Board, DCI projects and SDO representatives.
