Impact
Better support for research to industry transition is fundamental to create a sustainable research environment. The benefits of providing support and coaching people across their career changes will have an impact at several levels. At the level of research organization, which will be able to find alternative exploitation avenues for their technologies; at the level of individual developers and engineers, who will be able to understand opportunities and constraints and potential exploit their ideas in more promising conditions; and at the level of funding bodies, which will see a better interaction and knowledge sharing between research and industry.
Summary
SciencePAD (Science Platforms, Applications and Data) is an initiative promoted by the EMI project to support the use, reuse and preservation of software for scientific applications and define its relationships with people, organizations, data and publications. As part of its sustainability goals SciencePAD is proposing to set up an incubation laboratory to promote new ideas for innovative software and services and explore their potential use in commercial applications. This presentation will describe the main goals and plans of this activity.
Description
A great deal of software is developed as part and in support of scientific research. Developers and software engineers routinely work as part of research projects providing ideas, code and support to researchers. However, a large number of developers and engineers work on short-term contracts for short-term projects and many ideas and skills are lost over time. In addition, several your developers are personally motivated to pursue careers in commercial activities and further exploit their ideas. Support for transitioning from research to industry is therefore a very important tool to exploit opportunities, promote innovation and create a sustainable relationship between research and industry. SciencePAD is investigating the conditions and requirements to set up an incubation laboratory where ideas can be investigated and assessed not only from the technical point of view, but also from the legal, financial and business point of view in collaboration with research and industry experts and funding bodies. The current plans and goals of the initiative will be described and feedback from interested parties will be invited to better understand the practical aspects of setting the laboratory.
