Workshop Community Coordination and Communication (Track Lead: C Gater and S Andreozzi) Communities and Communication

Speaker

Sy Holsinger (EGI.EU)

Summary

In late 212, the EGI Council endorsed a thought experiment on how pay-for-use models could be implemented and users could be billed for their usage of EGI resources. To explore these options, EGI.eu is running a 'proof of concept'-style experiment with NGIs, resource centres and user communities to define areas such as accounting, pricing, invoicing, payments and service level management. This workshop offers an opportunity to present the pay-for-use model and provide an update regarding the current results of the experiment achieved to date.

Impact

The workshop provides an update from discussions that took place part of an EGI workshop held in Amsterdam from 28-30 January. Overall, this session will actively engage the community regarding the evolution of EGI pay-for-use experiment, present the preliminary results and allow participants to gain knowledge about the latest developments and future plans.

Description

The pay-for-use experiment is a response to an evolving landscape that offers access to on-demand ICT infrastructures through the use of cloud computing leading to increased flexibility and agility. These benefits are attracting parts of the research community. This approach also allows researchers another way of accessing new or additional resources, or to make the most of funding opportunities that allocate money directly to the purchase of resources and/or services for their work. Therefore, EGI is keen to explore pay-for-use options to increase the sustainability of a more market-driven e-Infrastructure to support the digital European Research Area.
In a distributed environment such as EGI, services are provided by a variety of different organisations spread across Europe. EGI.eu – as federator of resources – can, in this context, provide different degrees of shared services according to a range of models. Any pay-for-use model will complement the current practice of researchers accessing resources that are free at point of delivery ICT services, which were paid upfront by funding agencies. Resource providers would be given the flexibility to ‘opt-in’ for those who are able and willing to participate in the pay-for-use model.
