Description
The concept of Digital Knowledge Platforms (DKP) as a framework to support the full data cycle in research is presented.
DKPs extend the existing ideas in Data Management, first of all by providing a framework to exploit the power of ontologies at different levels.
DKPs aim to preserve knowledge explicitly, starting with the description of the Case Studies, and integrating data and software management and preservation on equal basis.
The uninterrupted support in the chain starts at the data acquisition level and covers up to the support for reuse and publication in an open framework, providing integrity and provenance controls.
A first prototype developed for a LifeWatch pilot project with different commercial companies using only open source software will be described and compared to existing solutions from other research areas.
The issues on the implementation of this platforms using cloud resources, and in particular FedCloud resources, will be discussed.
