Workshop: Design your e-Infrastructure

This interactive workshop will look into the design and development of e-infrastructures for emerging scientific communities and their use cases. The event brings together relevant H2020 projects, Research Infrastructures, representatives of e-infrastructure user and provider communities, as well as representatives of key EGI and EUDAT solutions and technologies. Participants will analyse the use cases and requirements of a selected set of e-infrastructure user/provider communities, then in a collaborative way will design and define suitable e-infrastructure setups and roadmaps to address these community needs.  

What do we want to get out of the workshop?

• Design and implementation plans for community-specific e-infrastructure use cases
• Answers to participants' questions concerning e-infrastructures 
• Better understanding of the featured scientific use cases
• Social network formed between use cases and e-infrastructure service providers
• Gaps in e-infrastructure offerings, and service candidates to fill these gaps

About the participating e-infrastructures:

• EGI operates one of the largest multi-disciplinary e-infrastructure of the world (more than 350 providers) and the EGI community has long running experience in the design and development of e-infrastructures. The workshop makes EGI services and the 'EGI know-how' available for emerging e-infrastructure communities. (www.egi.eu)
• EUDAT offers common data services, supporting multiple research communities as well as individuals, through a geographically distributed, resilient network of 35 European organisations. These shared services and storage resources are distributed across 15 European nations and data is stored alongside some of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers. (www.eudat.eu)

• Project, research infrastructures and research communities who would like to setup, access or operate an e-infrastructure. Please email gergely.sipos@egi.eu if you would like to contribute with an e-infrastructure use case to the event, so we can discuss the details with you in advance.
• Technology and service providers from the EGI community. Please email gergely.sipos@egi.eu if you would like to represent a technology or service provider from the EGI community at the workshop.

This workshop is free of charge, but requires registration. (See link below). This workshop is a co-location of the EGI Conference 2016. The Conference requires separate registration.

09:15 → 10:30 E-infrastructure services

During this session the EGI and EUDAT service catalogues will be presented and discussed. This will help us establish a common understanding about existing possibilities with these two infrastructures, so later during the day we will be able to map community use cases to specific e-infrastructure capabilities. The session will also empower participants with knowledge on the EGI and EUDAT service portfolios so the relevance of these can be recognise in community support activities in the future.

13:30 → 16:30 Break-out groups - Designing community-specific e-infrastructures (incl. a coffee break at approx 14:40)

Forming break-out groups to analyse and further discuss the e-infrastructure use cases. Each group will consist of representatives of one/more use cases and EGI e-infrastructure experts/providers. The use case analysis will be based on pre-defined templates to be provided by workshop organisers. The outcome of the analysis will be e-infrastructure design and e-infrastructure implementation plans. These will be presented to the audience at the end of the day, and will drive post-workshop implementation work.

First break-out: Complete the 'Background' and 'Users' topics - 1h
1. Who will be the user? Can the users be characterised? How many are they?
2. What will be the value of the infrastructure for them? What will the system exactly deliver to them? (Customer's pains and gains)
3. How should they use the system? (Customer's job)
4. What's the timeline for development, testing and large-scale operation? (Consecutive releases can/should be considered.)

Second break-out: Define design and implementation plan - 1.5 h
1. What should the first version include? - The most basic product prototype imaginable already bringing value to the users (the so-called Minimal Viable Product - MVP)
2. Which components/services already exist in this architecture?
3. Which components/services are under development (and by who)?
4. Which components/services should be still brought into the system? Can EGI/EUDAT partners do it?
5. Are there gaps in the EGI/EUDAT service catalogues that should be filled to realise the use case? Which service provider could fill the gap?
