Description of the work
ELIXIR is a distributed European life sciences research infrastructure for biological information (http://www.elixir-europe.org)). The mission of ELIXIR is to deliver high-quality biological data resources and services to meet for example the medical and environmental Grand Challenges that Europe faces. Naturally, e-Infrastructure components like network, storage and compute are needed in the process. ELIXIR is entering construction stage in 2011-12 based on the extensive stakeholder consultations that took place in 2007-2010. The talk introduces the structure of ELIXIR in the European setting as a "Hub and Nodes" collaboration between distributed organizations formed based on the consultations. The e-Infrastructure needs of the research community driving ELIXIR are introduced based on the ELIXIR technical feasibility studies, and use cases such as e-Infrastructure service concepts for biomedical computing and biological imaging workflow.

Tommi Nyronen, CSC
Impact
Dr. Tommi Nyrönen works as a development manager at CSC – the IT Center for Science Ltd. and is the Finnish contact in ELIXIR since 2007. After receiving Ph.D. in biochemistry (biocomputing) in 2000, TN worked to develop computational drug discovery environment at CSC and became a manager of CSC’s bioinformatics services in 2003. He has been involved in a number of research and development projects in building ICT services for science nationally and at the EU level. He has published about 30 peer-reviewed scientific papers, developed scientific software solutions, managed operational services and training, and is an inventor in three medicinal patent families.
