Description
The EGI Technical Forum 2013 will take place from 16 to 20 September in Madrid at the Meliá-Castilla Hotel & Convention Centre. The event is being organised with the support of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain, the Spanish National Research Council and Red IRIS.
In view of the growing impact and recognition that the EGI Forums have had within the grid user community, the following other conferences are also being co-located at this event:

        Elisa Martin Garijo is Director of Technology for IBM in Spain, Portugal, Greece and Israel. She is also the Senior Architect for certified Information Systems and holds the position of Distinguished Engineer and a member of the leadership team of the IBM Academy of Technology. As director of technology, Elisa brings technology and innovation in the country, with the main objective of stimulating intelligent solutions in Spanish companies and institutions that use technology and innovation as drivers for competitiveness. In this presentation Elisa Martin Garijo will address the transfer of innovative experiences and technology to business and society, showing how adding value can be done by connecting customers with IBM Research. A member of the leadership team of the IBM Academy of Technology, Elisa participates in research studies internationally and nationally. She has two patents and has written several collaborations and studies on products and technical processes.

      EGI Cloud Infrastructure Platform: State of the art & demonstration Auditorium

      This double-session provides an overview of the current state of the art of the EGI Cloud Infrastructure Platform (CLIP).
      After a brief introduction, Mr. David Blundell of 100% IT begins with a keynote on a commercial Cloud provider's viewpoint and motivation on joining the federation providing the CLIP.
      Next, Mr. David Wallom of OeRC will give an overview of the current state of the art and future plans on the EGI Cloud Infrastructure Platform.
      Following, task leaders from the EGI-InSPIRE project explain in more detail the technical background and current state of implementations of key capabilities of the EGI CLIP.
      The session will conclude with a comprehensive live demonstration of the capabilities of the EGI Cloud Infrastructure Platform, including a live demonstration from the ESA and BioVeL user communities.

      Evaluating the scientific impact of e-Infrastructures Patio 2

      EGI supports world-class research conducted by more than 22,000 scientists and researchers across 50 countries. However, given the distributed nature of EGI and access policies across 200 Virtual Organisations, it is difficult to understand the excellent science being done thanks to the use of e-Infrastructures. In turn, demonstration of this impact to governments and funding agencies is hindered, which leads to increased uncertainty of future funding. A number of activities are taking place across the e-Infrastructure community to increase this knowledge and thus promote scientific results and impact. In particular, collaboration has been established with the OpenAIRE to provide the necessary services to tackle this issue. This session will provide an update on the progress of the implementation of the new processes, tools and services for the tracking of scientific output made through EGI and to better map the scientific impact.

      The aim of this session is to bring the NGI International Liaisons (NILs) together to discuss how to push forward the strategic non-operational activities taking place within the EGI ecosystem. These activities include outreach to and engagement with new and existing user communities, marketing & communications or training.

      Building on feedback from previous meetings at the EGI forums, the NIL session will be structured as an interactive discussion with an open agenda. This move from the classic format organised around individual presentations, will provide a better opportunity to make the most of the NILs collective experience and expertise. The result will be a focused discussion about how to proceed with non-operational issues and a stronger NIL network at work for the benefit of the wider EGI community.

      Various components of operating systems as well as grid middleware typically produce a lot of information about their operations. The logs contain important details and are invaluable source of information that is important to reveal misconfigurations, etc. Logs also play very important role during investigation of security incidents since they make it possible to track down activites of users and applications.

      In the sessions we will present best practices about how logs can be collected and what tools are needed to establish a central logging instance. We will also present current works focusing on efficient log management.

      We will try to collect people from other NGIs that have experience in this area to share during the sessions.

      The expected audience of the session is the site administrators and security officers.

SCI-BUS is a project with 15 partners, 6 subcontractors and 4 associated partners that are developing their own gateways: they are part of the target audience expected in the session as well as several participants around other Science Gateway projects or gUSE/WS-PGRADE technology.

      The tutorial is organized as an extension of other training activities carried out by the project as the Code Camp 2012 or the Summer School 2013 (http://www.sci-bus.eu/tutorials). Attendees are expected to learn about the gUSE/WS-PGRADE technology and they will be able keep in touch with the main technical team of the project.

      e-Infrastructure communities heavily rely on third party software and technology providers, both for infrastructure service providers and the researchers that use them. Some technology providers that have supported EGI over the last years were co-funded through EC projects (e.g. EMI, IGE). For the first time in the last decade, the co-funding mechanism of the EC has no continuity and the involved organisations are exploring new business models and governance structures to continue deliver their value to the e-infrastructures community (eg. See the MeDIA initiative). This session aims at discussing the emerging business models, governance frameworks and their relationship to EGI in order to support the discussion on the best way forward.

        EGI Software Supply Management 20m
        Similar to many e-Infrastructure communities, EGI relies on third party software and technology providers to deliver solutions to a vast array of research communities. Some technology providers that have supported EGI over the last years were co-funded through EC projects, which are now transitioning to new business models and governance structures to continue deliver their value to the e-infrastructures community. As an open ICT ecosystem that relies on such third party technology providers and product teams for the required software or innovation, clearly defining what services are being offered and by whom is required to allow for the most appropriate and effective agreement to be established following service management best practices. There are a number of agreements that are dictated by the service offered such as SLAs, OLAs, MoUs and underpinning contracts. EGI is developing SLA templates for technology and service providers to complement the OLA framework with resource providers to ensure service continuity on the technical level. This framework ensures interoperation of operational services, QoS, and enforces a common set of policies and procedures. The federated nature of EGI also requires an unusual approach to service management, which affects how EGI manages its software supply. Through dedicated consultancy as a client partner within the FedSM project, EGI is developing related processes and procedures according the FitSM standard (ITIL best practices tailored for federated environments) in order to better interact with technology providers. Therefore this presentation will cover the following main areas: 1.) Opportunities: Why engage with EGI (e.g. value proposition, benefits, opportunities) 2.) Software Supply Management: How to engage - processes, procedures and agreements (e.g. SLAs, Contracts) 3.) Services: What is offered by EGI for Technology Providers 4.)         The MeDIA Initiative: Governance Models and Technology Supply Management 20m
        As a result of the EMI project’s success for the collaborative development and support of middleware in Europe, the majority of the former EMI product teams have decided to stay in touch to optimise ongoing and future collaborative work to the benefit of their customers. In order to simplify interactions between the teams, they agreed to build MeDIA, an open, lightweight umbrella collaboration to essentially coordinate networking activities, keep track of ongoing collaborative work and support the instantiation of new middleware solutions and innovation activities. Established in April 2013, MeDIA is building up a web presence and is currently in the process of agreeing on some basic procedures on how to handle development team interactions and collaborations. This presentation is intended to: 1.) Provide an overview of the MeDIA collaboration: Main Objectives and Governance Models 2.) Describe the opportunities and services available for EGI and development teams, the possibilities of collaboration and the benefits for user communities and the resource providers 3.) Offer a call for suggestions for collaborative development activities and improvement measures for working together.

        The QosCosGrid (QCG) middleware is an integrated system offering advanced job and resource management capabilities to deliver to end-users supercomputer-like performance and structure. By connecting many distributed computing resources together, QCG offers highly efficient mapping, execution and monitoring capabilities for variety of applications, such as parameter sweep, workflows, MPI or hybrid MPI-OpenMP. Thanks to QosCosGrid, largescale applications, multi-scale or complex computing models can be automatically distributed over a network of computing resources with guaranteed QoS. The middleware provides also a set of unique features, such as advance reservation, co-allocation of distributed computing resources, support for interactive tasks.

        EC Perspective on DCIs and Horizon 2020 30m
        The talk will focus on how the policy of the European Commission on Distributed Computing infrastructures and how these can address the increasing needs of research communities for processing massive amounts of data and experimenting in silico. The talk will present policies and actions expected for e-Infrastructures under Horizon 2020, how Cloud Computing becomes part of the solution, and provide an update on the recent Call for proposals for exa-scale computing. Luis C. BUSQUETS PÉREZ has been working in the ICT sector for more than 15 years. Since 2006 he is an official of the European Commission and has collaborated in the updating of the European ICT standardisation policy and competition case handling in the IT sector. In 2011, Luis joined the e-infrastructures unit and is the project officer for the most of the DCI projects, e.g. EGI-InSPIRE and Helix Nebula.

        HPC-optimized clouds provide access to flexible and elastic scientific and technical computing to solve complex problems and drive innovation. This talk will describe the most demanded features for building HPC and science clouds. Using real-life case studies from leading research and industry organizations, the talks will illustrate how OpenNebula effectively addresses the challenges of cloud usage, scheduling, security, networking and storage. The keynote will end with a view of the future of private Clouds in HPC and science, and comment on the grid as the foundation of cloud federation.

        Computing Testbed as a Service - CTaaS in FutureGrid 30m
        https://portal.futuregrid.org/ We describe our experience in providing Computing Testbed as a Service CTaaS in FutureGrid with lessons for the Future. We give an overview of the operating model as now and looking forward. We give details of partners, hardware and services offered and go through sample projects in the fore areas computer science, domain science, education and technology evaluation/testing. We describe relation of FutureGrid to other academic and commercial systems. We describe key CTaaS technology including security, image/appliance management, monitoring/metrics, and dynamic provisioning. We consider it as an onramp with cloud/HPC bursting to other systems. Fox received a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Cambridge University and is now distinguished professor of Informatics and Computing, and Physics at Indiana University where he is director of the Community Grids Laboratory and Associate Dean for Research at the School of Informatics and Computing. He currently works in applying computer science to Bioinformatics, Sensor Clouds, Earthquake and Ice-sheet Science, and Particle Physics. He is principal investigator of FutureGrid – a facility to enable development of new approaches to computing. He has experience in online education and its use in MOOC’s for areas like Data and Computational Science. He is a Fellow of APS and ACM.

      The goal of the workshop is to gather feedback from the EGI communities to be used as an input for the definition of the IOTA profile.
      During the Community Forum, the Federated AAI workshop included a presentation about the "Light-weight Identity Vetting Environment" authentication profile under definition within IGTF. Using the input from several identity providers and non-EGI resource providers, the profile has been further developed so as to relax some of the requirements presented during the Forum AAI workshop.
      This workshop follows up and extends the authentication profile discussion.
      The workshop aims to:
      * Present the new Identifier-Only Trust Assurance (IOTA) profile to the EGI communities
      * Get feedback from the EGI resource providers about the profile profile minimum requirements to enable the CAs in the resource centres (e.g. minimum incident response, traceability or ID common name).
      * Get feedback from the EGI user communities about how a differentiate level of assurance 'can bring in'/'reach out to' new users.

      Within a timeslot of 5 minutes (3-4 minutes talk, 1-2 minutes Q&A) each of the six speakers will highlight the benefit of their solution, offering or needs (as Technology Provider, Resource Provider or Research Community, respectively) and how it will add value to the EGI Cloud Infrastructure Platform ecosystem.
      After a brief voting, three speakers will be invited to come forward and provide more information in a dedicated 10 minutes timeslot each, and to further discuss specific collaborations and actions for the time ahead.

      The participants will learn basic incident response and forensic skills in a virtualized environment. After a couple of introductory lectures on field forensics and incident response, most of the time will be taken up by a tournament where the participants form teams that are given full root access to simulated HPC sites. Their task is to defend against and analyze realistic attacks of increasing sophistication, while keeping their systems up and running. The teams will be scored on their performance! At the end of the event we will discuss the findings. The crucial point here is to find how the site was attacked and which steps could be taken to prevent this from happening again. This should result in some best practices on how to reduce the attack surface of your site.

      The maximum number of participants will be 18, on a first come, first served basis

      The glue-validator command is a very useful command for system administrators and middleware developers who want to validate whether the information published by the service they are managing or developing is compliant with Glue 2.0. In particular, the glue-validator is able to validate against the EGI profile for GLUE 2.0

      This training will present the glue-validator and how to validate the information published by a site or a resource against the EGI profile for GLUE 2.0. It will present the different command line options and possible output formats. The training will explain how to deal with the different failure messages from a practical point of view. An overview of the deployment of GLUE 2 validation in production will be introduced, explaining what type of errors will raise alarms for the sites and how support to sites will be given by ROD. Finally, details on the status of GLUE 2 will be presented, highlighting the most common errors and what to do to overcome them.

        Easy Development and Integration of Science Gateways with Vine Toolkit in production. 20m
        The advanced web-based graphic and multimedia oriented user interfaces (GUIs) designed for scientists and engineers could change the way users collaborate, share computing experiments and data, and work together to solve day-to-day problems. Moreover, future science and engineering gateways will influence the way users will not only access their data, but also control and monitor their demanding computing simulations using the Internet. To allow users to interact remotely with clusters, supercomputers and large-scale computing environments in a more interactive and visual manner, we present example Science Gateways for different scientific applications used by communities in the PL-Grid infrastructure. The PL-Grid portal has been successfully integrated with Vine Toolkit it offers now users a set of gateways connected to all production grid sites in Poland. In a nutshell, Vine Toolkit is a modular, extensible and easy-to-use tool that can be used as a graphical web front-end for remote job and data management. It also offers high-level Application Programming Interface (API) for various applications, visualization components and building blocks to allow interoperability between HPC and grid technologies, such as QosCosGrid, gLite, Unicore, iRODS, etc. It supports Adobe Flex and BlazeDS technologies to help developers quickly prototype and build advanced and rich web applications similar to many stand-alone GUIs. Additionally, Vine Toolkit has been integrated with well-known open source web frameworks, such as Liferay and Gridsphere. In this presentation, we briefly describe new technological solutions relevant to advanced scientific and engineering portals driven by various requirements defined by experts in chemistry, molecular physics, nanotechnology and nanomechanics.

        The use of the SCMS-EMI as scientific gateway in BCC of NGI_UA 20m
        SCMS-EMI system ( http://appdb.egi.eu/#p=L2FwcHMvZGV0YWlscz9pZD03MjI= ) is an integral part of the open cluster management system SCMS-PRO (http://scms.pro/, http://scms.pro/files/print/brochure.pdf ) and has been established at the end of last year in the Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (BITP), who is also the BCC (Basic Coordination Centre) of the Ukrainian Grid. The presentation demonstrates the use of the SCMS-EMI as scientific gateway by cluster users of BITP in solving problems of biophysics, nano-technology, metal-physics, superconductivity via the quantum-chemical calculations, molecular dynamics, and special techniques combined with the use of EGI Grid resources. Members are scientists, professionals in their areas and SCMS-EMI allows them not to delve into the details of the operating environment of the grid-cluster.

        Exposing WS-PGRADE/gUSE for large user communities 20m
        In our talk we would like to introduce the new developments of WS-PGRADE/gUSE, that enable exploitation of the technology by larger user communities: the robot certificate extension, the performance improvements and the possibility to use the Data Bridge for storage management through the Data Browser portlet. The robot certificate extension enables the usage of workflows containing credential-dependent DCIs without the need to posses such credentials (in line with the EGI VO Portal policy document). The performance improvement highly increases the job capacity and job throughput of WS-PGRADE/gUSE, thus the technology is feasible for communities with larger workflows and large number of users as well. Finally, the Data Browser portlet enables to manage data located on storage resources supported by the Data Bridge service.

      New developments in WLCG for Run2 Doblón

      The goal of the session is to provide and update on some developments in WLCG for the next run of collisions (Run2). The selected talks are of interest to people from LHC and other communities. Among the several ongoing projects, this session focus for data transfers, data access, monitoring and how WLCG testing activities are better integrated into EGI software releasing procedures. The speakers of the workshop are the key developers/deployers of the technology and new tools.

      As of today, special focus is on Data and on how to optimize Data Access on the grid. This is in part because of real world experience with running services for VOs of various sizes and characteristics; in part also because of technology evolution, with fibre optics communications evolving at a much faster pace than other components of the computing systems. This evolution has opened the possibility for remote data access to become the norm, which in turn influences how we use data transfer, which may drift towards being more of a load balancing tool rather than a data access enabler. Dataset Catalogues need to evolve in parallel, so that users and applications can quickly and efficiently find the datasets they need. In parallel, network monitoring (perfsonar-PS, WLCG data transfer monitoring) are becoming crucial tools to monitor data transfers and remote accesses performance, and monitoring the health of the network.

However debugging problems in wide-area networks has never been easy. The LHC community has been using perfSONAR-PS toolkit distributions to instrument their sites and setup scheduled tests since USATLAS began deploying it around 2007. In the last two years there has been a significant increase in the number of sites using the perfSONAR-PS toolkit worldwide, starting with the adoption of the perfSONAR-PS toolkit for the LHCOPN and its following use for tracking the network impact of the transition to LHCONE. Now we have a WLCG Task-force targeting the deployment of perfSONAR-PS toolkits at all WLCG Tier-1 and Tier-2 sites. We will report on the WLCG taskforce plans and experience gained from these efforts and highlight our lessons learned. After summarizing our status we will conclude with our plans for the future.

      Open data is the new paradigm that proclaims that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or any other mechanisms of control. This is especially important in publicly funded research where taxpayers have already paid for the results, therefore should be open for reuse. The European Commission has established its own strategy for ensuring the increased openness and availability of scientific data produced via EU funded projects. This does not mean a reduction of business opportunities, in fact, there are new areas of potential business around open data such as applications that can be built on top around data mining and analysis. This session aims to raise the awareness of the opportunities from open science, discuss how EGI can help implementing the policy and understand how user communities can benefit from opening up their research outputs.

        Exploring the value of Open Data on science and research 30m
        Data is seen as the new oil, an important raw material for a variety of new information products and services. “Data has more value if it is open available”, said Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission and responsible for the Digital Agenda. “Open data provides more transparency and better decision-making”. Expectations are high, but many organisations are struggling to find and define the economic, social and societal value of open data. Therefore Business Modelling was an important work stream within the Dutch ‘Nederland Opent Data’ project. Participants discussed the application of open data using Osterwald’s “Business Model Canvas”. Value propositions were defined by asking the right questions. Based on the results of numerous workshops, a business model generator for open data was developed. This presentation aims to discuss new and potential business models, clarify the value of open data on science and research and share knowledge and experience in the area with the open science domain.

        InSilicoLab: A framework for domain-specific science gateways 20m
        The family of InSilicoLab science gateways emerged as an answer to a need for tools that would be able to expose the power of distributed computing infrastructures to scientists in a way that resembles their usual work. They should be able to use the gateway as a workspace that organises their data and allows for complex computations in a way specific to their domain of science. The InSilicoLab framework is a technology that allows creating such science gateways, tailored to a specific domain of science, or even a class of problems in that domain. The core of the framework provides mechanisms for managing the users’ data - categorising it, describing with metadata and tracking its origin - as well as for running computations on distributed computing infrastructures. Every InSilicoLab gateway instance is build based on the core components, but is provided with data models, analysis scenarios and interface specific to the actual domain it is created for.

        Standard-based Interoperability amongst HPC, Grid and Cloud Resources Distributed Worldwide with Catania Science Gateways 20m
        The availability of powerful COTS computers and the decrease of costs of LAN components triggered in the first half of 90’s the emergence of cluster computing for High Throughput Computing (HTC) applications. “Farms” of computers with many-core processors, interconnected by very low latency networks, have become the norm also in the domain of High Performance Computing (HPC) and in the last five years about 80% of the Top500 machines are based on a distributed architecture. Moreover, the steep decrease of costs of large/huge-bandwidth WANs has fostered in the recent years the spread and the uptake of the grid computing paradigm. Grid infrastructures are being built in several areas of the world but, despite the huge investments made by the European Commission and by other funding agencies, both at national and international level, the total number of users is in the order of magnitude of 104 that is much less, for example, than 106 which is the order of magnitude of the number of EU researchers in the public sector. The reasons for this have been investigated through studies promoted by the European Commission itself and mostly reside in the complexity for non-IT-expert users of the Grid Security Infrastructure, based on a Public Key Infrastructure, in the little adoption of standards to let different middleware be interoperable among each other, and in the lack of general frameworks to build easily customizable and easy to use high-level user interfaces. Indeed, several, and quite different, middleware have been deployed on the grid infrastructures existing in the world with no (or very little) interoperability amongst each other. The distributed computing ecosystem has become even more complex with the recent emergence of cloud computing. Private cloud providers rely on “non-disclosed” architectures and have business models that leave very little (if any) room to interoperability and “federability”. Open federated clouds for research have also started to be created the interaction between computing clouds and storage clouds is in many cases not straightforward. This complexity keeps most of non-IT expert research communities away and forces early adopters to have several accounts on several services if their research communities span across different e-infrastructures. Recently, the Grid team at INFN Catania has developed the Catania Science Gateway Framework to easily and quickly build Science Gateways which can be configured as Service Providers of Identity Federations and then potentially accessible by huge numbers of users. The framework makes use of the SAGA and OCCI standards, defined by the Open Grid Forum, to perform middleware-independent job and data management as well as cloud management and operation. In this contribution we will present the Catania Science Gateway Framework and the results of the program outlined by the CHAIN-REDS project to demonstrate standard-based interoperability amongst high performance computing, grid and cloud resources distributed worldwide and based on several different middleware stacks.

        Apache Airavata: Open Community Science Gateway Framework 20m
        In this talk, we will present Apache Airavata science gateway framework suite, which is used to manage the complex execution and workflow patterns of scientific applications on distributed computing resources. Apache Airavata is used to develop/enhance science gateways and scientific workflows for astronomy, astrophysics, bioinformatics, computational chemistry, geosciences, and nuclear physics. In this presentation, we examine selected motivating use cases, use these to illustrate Apache Airavata’s architecture and design, and describe features in the current Airavata software. As an Apache Software Foundation project, Apache Airavata is more than open source software. It is also an openly governed software project that encourages external participation in all forms, ranging from contributed code patches to documentation assistance to public advocacy. We review these governance aspects of the project and the potential benefits they offer for other academic software projects. We also highlight the successful Google Summer of Code contributions to the project and integration of Unicore Services on Juelich Supercomputing Center to Ultrascan, an XSEDE Science Gateway.

We are also entering an era of large-scale, interdisciplinary science fuelled by large data sets that will be analysed by current and future generations of scientists. Natural, managed, and socio-economic systems are subjected to complex interacting stresses that play out over extended periods of time and space. Here, we provide the emergent science perspective and rationale for Environmental Observatories, and the challenges they face in developing e-infrastructures for advancing both management and the scientific frontier.

        ELIXIR: The European research infrastructure for life-science data 45m
        The mission of ELIXIR is to construct and operate a sustainable infrastructure for the sharing of biological information throughout Europe, to support life science research and drive its translation to medicine and the environment, the bio- industries and society. The challenges in storing, integrating and analyzing the data from modern biological experiments are real; ELIXIR meets this challenge through a distributed e-infrastructure of bioinformatics services built around established European centers of excellence. Niklas Blomberg holds a PhD from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg where he worked on structural bioinformatics and protein NMR spectroscopy. In 1999 he joined AstraZeneca's Structural Chemistry Lab as a computational chemist. In 2011-2013, he built a cross-disciplinary team for Computational Chemistry and Biology to support Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmune research. He is an industry advisor in national e-Science initiatives and until recently he was the chair of BILS, the Swedish ELIXIR node.

      The sessions will provide an opportunity for sites to ask questions about how they should plan and execute the upgrade to the new APEL Client. In addition it will provide a forum to explore whether deploying a Regional APEL Server and Accounting Portal is appropriate for their region.
      This session is aimed at sites installing new versions of the Accounting software; the new APEL Client (released as part of EMI 3), the Regional APEL Server and the Regional Accounting Portal.

      There will be three 20 minute slots.

      The first will cover the installation of the latest version of the APEL Client and will include possible upgrade scenarios for sites running previous versions.

      The second will describe how to set up a Regional APEL Server. As the Regional APEL Server is available only for sites running the EMI 3 APEL Client, it is important to attend the first part of this session as well.

      The third slot will introduce the new Regional Accounting Portal and describe how this can be set up with a Regional APEL Server.

      OpenMoLE (www.openmole.org) is a platform which eases the development of massively parallel applications at a cluster, a grid or a cloud scale. It provides a reliable and high-level abstraction of execution environments to the end users and to the web portals. Indeed, the platform deals with software installations, file transfers, job failures, and renders the distributed execution entirely transparent. In this training session we propose to teach how to design OpenMoLE workflows. Attendees will learn how to:
      - embed an external application in OpenMOLE,
      - design large scale OpenMoLE workflows generating several hundred of thousand of jobs,
      - gather / aggregate / store produced data,
      - delegate the computing load to EGI / DIRAC / clusters / ad-hoc desktop-grids..
      A practical session during which the audience of up to 20 will use OpenMoLE to design grid and cluster enabled applications.

        Using the GC3Pie high-throughput library for model calibration and distributed optimization workflow 20m
        Model calibration is the process of modifying the input parameters to a computational model to find the best match against an observed set of data (reference model). The proposed talk introduces the GC3Pie optimizer library and shows how it can be used to write robust and scalable calibration models. The main advantage of such a library is the complete transparency w.r.t. the underlying computational infrastructure: GC3Pie allows one to execute the same calibration workflow on a laptop or a large scale computational infrastructure like an HPC cluster, a distributed grid, or an EC2-like cloud, without modification to the Python code.

        Analysis of Scientific Cloud Computing requirements 20m
        While the requirements of enterprise and web applications have driven the development of Cloud computing, some of its key features, such as customized environments and rapid elasticity, could also benet scientic applications. However, neither virtualization techniques nor Cloud-like access to resources is common in scientic computing centers due to the negative perception of the impact that virtualization techniques introduce. In this presentation we discuss the feasibility of the cloud model to satisfy the computational science requirements and the main drawbacks that need to be addressed by cloud resource providers so that the maximum benefit can be obtained from a given cloud infrastructure.

A researcher can build his own workflow by selecting and applying successive services (data processing) registered in BiodiversityCatalogue.org, or he can re‐use existing workflows available from BioVeL's library held in biovel.myexperiment.org. This e‐laboratory cuts down research time and overhead expenses. INFN and CNR in the context of this project has realized a Web Service based solution that is able to provide a reliable solution for request and manage the execution of a given application within the most used computing infrastructure: EGI Grid, IaaS cloud, Local Batch farms and dedicated nodes. The software developed enables the users to easily add new services to their workflow requesting a specific calculation to be performed, without even knowing where it will be executed. A scheduling system underneath is able to deal with scheduling the execution of the applications, managing accounting, dealing with failures, and also deal with data management issues. In the work we will present the development done and the results achieved also in terms of exploiting new cloud computing infrastructures.

        Multi-centric studies in computational neurosciences 15m
        Neuroscience studies are increasingly based on large population databases. International‐scale data cohorts have been deployed to tackle societal challenges caused by some neurodegenerative studies such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. This talk will discuss the need to federate heterogeneous data stores distributed over different neuroscience centres and link this data with complementary sources of information (e.g. demographic information or biology data bases). It will introduce semantic data representation and mediation concepts and illustrate their integration in a neuroscience resources sharing platform to facilitate multi‐centric neuroscience studies.

        Identification of model parameters in cloud deployed simulation service 10m
        Identification of parameters is a fundamental part of scientific work within physiology research. The methods to identify systems of complex model are usually based on some simplification and optimization which may deliver the results quickly, but usually some constraints must be followed otherwise these methods may lead to misinterpreted results. Brute-force methods, however, may take too long time and are used usually on small models. To identify parameters of complex models may be time consuming, however, some degree of parallelization can be achieved with optimization methods e.g. genetic algorithm. We introduce a method where a simulation of a model is distributed into web services accessible via REST interface, each web service is deployed in cloud and can be cloned per request. So the combination of brute-force method with some optimization method can be used also in complex models and estimated time and continuous results can be seen during the computation.

        A BioInformatics Framework for NGS Immunogenetics Data (BIND) 10m
        IG/TR repertoire analysis can offer biological and clinical information with important implications for understanding normal and pathologic immune conditions. BIND will delineate a methodology and make available tools that allow for detailed repertoire analysis based on NGS data. Additionally, BIND will set the basis for the detection of disease‐specific IG/TR molecular properties that may later be used for early diagnosis of diseases, starting from cancer, but also extensible to autoimmune, and other diseases. The methodological approach and the toolbox that will be produced aim to constitute a reference in the field, applicable in other scenarios as well. Additionally, the toolbox will be made available for research and educational applications in the field, and will be in a form allowing extensibility and further advancements. In particular, we will focus on the systematic and quantitative processing of the output produced from the analysis of the NGS data by algorithms and tools of the International ImMunoGeneTics information system (IMGT), the global reference on Immunoinformatics. IMGT/HighV‐QUEST is the high‐throughput tool for the analysis of thousands of immunoglobulin (IG) and T cell receptor (TR) rearranged nucleotide sequences (up to 150,000 sequences) per run (http://www.imgt.org/). The standard output is a series of text files with information per sequence on the recognition of genes involved as well as the aminoacids and nucleotides of specific areas of interest. The huge amount and the complexity of the data involved establish a set of requirements ideally covered through a Gridinfrastructure. To this end, the design and implementation of the process have the particular attributes of the Grid environment in mind, especially as regards the execution of task pipelines on massive data, employing opensource programming tools. Our proposed approach is as follows: • A reading and information management framework of the IMGT-­VQuest report. The challenge here pertains to the large amount of data, as well as to the heterogeneity of data types, ranging from simple values, and strings, to DNA sequences, that need to be simultaneously handled, tackling big data issues. • Preprocessing and Filtering of the IMGT report data, to exclude potentially erroneous information. This will include a series of rules that can be standardized and reused as a tool, based on existing and ongoing experience as regards the NGS readings. • Intrasubject Repertoire and statistical analysis of the IMGT report data, for the identification of clonality and diversity. This will be based on state-of‐art methods. • Intersubject clustering based on the dominant repertoire expression. Additional clustering methods based on a variety of similarity measures from the biomedical informatics domain will be explored. • Integration of the proposed functionality and deployment as a toolbox. • Testing and evaluation of the proposed functionality with expert knowledge and existing data made available via the EuroClonality group (http://www.euroclonality.org/).

        Structural biology applications within WeNMR 10m
        WeNMR is both a three years project funded under the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme (e-Infrastructure RI-261571) and a Virtual Research Community supported by EGI. WeNMR aims at bringing together research teams in structural biology into a virtual research community at a worldwide level and provide them with a platform integrating and streamlining the computational approaches necessary for NMR and SAXS data analysis and structural modelling. The WeNMR Virtual Research Community (VRC) provides access to the services, a knowledge base, help center and various information and (social) communication channels. Access to the services is provided through easy-to-use web interfaces using the computational resources provided by the grid through the eNMR Virtual Organization (VO). In this contribution, we will present an overview of the WeNMR services as well as of the WeNMR VRC implementation and features.         Unveiling the mechanisms behind biomolecules – the role of Grid 30m
        Structural Biology studies the molecular structure of biological molecules and the way molecules interact with each other. This information is crucial to understand how they function inside living cells and how their deregulation can lead to disease. Structures are determined by measuring distances and angles between the millions of atoms inside proteins and other macromolecules. To obtain structures and dynamical information at high resolution (angstroms magnitude) bench experiments and computational calculations are used synergistically. Computation of the atom-atom interactions required to describe the simplest of dynamics and cellular process increases the demand for computer power and more accurate methods. Grid Infrastructures provide a solution to tackle this bottleneck. In this talk I will focus firstly on available applications and examples relevant to the Structural Biology community and secondly on the importance of having access to the Grid Infrastructure.

        The most powerful European astronomical observatories and their interplay with e-science 30m
        Astronomy is largely an observationally-driven scientific discipline, but with a wide range of associated activities (space exploration, computing, data archiving, theory and simulations, etc.). Large observatories built and operated by European intergovernmental organisations, in particular those from ESO - European Southern Observatory and ESA - European Space Agency, drive a very significant part of the scientific activity in astronomy around the world. I will present ESO's programme, including existing (VLT, ALMA) and future (E-ELT) most powerful ground-based astronomical observatories and their interplay with ESA's space observatories. I will also illustrate a few avenues where astronomy meets e-science, both in operating large infrastructures, but also in generating numerical models and archiving/accessing data collected by observational infrastructures. Xavier Barcons is an astronomer, based at the Instituto de Física de Cantabria in Spain. His research in astronomy focuses on active galaxies and X-ray sky surveys. He has advised the European Space Agency, the Spanish government and a large number of research infrastructures and projects. Sin 2012, Xavier Barcons is the council president of the European Space Observatory.

      The Applications Database (AppDB - http://appdb.egi.eu) is a registry and repository for various types of software tools and services that are available for EGI users. It makes software visible, searchable and usable within, and beyond the EGI community. Technical and research domain specific filters, tags, ratings and comments provide a structure for the content. Notification and broadcast services ensure that users and followers are informed about new software entries and updates made to registered items.

      Since March 2013 AppDB enables software developers to share source code or executable software in the repository. Recent integration with Google's search engine makes content from AppDB highly visible for the Google search engine, and ultimately for all e-infrastructure users around the world.

      This training session will introduce the rich service set of AppDB to attendees of the EGI Technical Forum. The training will include several use cases that attendees can implement during the session to register and increase the visibility and support of their own software using AppDB. The training will be conducted by members of IASA (Greece) and EGI.eu (Natherlands) and will be relevant to any software developer, platform developer, platform integrator, scientific programmer and software user who is affiliated with EGI, or with any other e-infrastructure in and outside of Europe.

      This foundation training course in federated IT Service Management introduces the fundamentals of service management and some of the specific challenges faced when managing IT services across complex and federated communities.

      The training is carried out across one afternoon and the following morning, and culminates in a short exam. Successfully passing the exam will grant participants a Foundation Certificate in Service Management for Federated IT Infrastructures, provided by the internationally recognised standards organisation TÜV SÜD.

      The course is structured around the FitSM-1:2013 standard (see www.fedsm.eu/fitsm for details), which is compatible with ITIL and ISO/IEC 20000. The FitSM standard and the training course are produced and run by the FedSM project, which is funded by the EC to bring improved service management to several infrastructures, including EGI.

The IBERGRID conference series is organized since 2007 in the context of the bi-lateral agreements between Portugal and Spain in matter of grid computing, super-computing, and scientific data repositories. The IBERGRID conferences have as goal the promotion of the Iberian e-science activities.

      This year edition will take place in Madrid, co-located with the EGI Technical Forum 2013. We would like to invite you to attend to this event that will join more than 120 researchers, users and datacenter managers from the most important scientific computing infrastructures in Spain and Portugal. The attendance expected for the EGI TF 2013 is over 500 people.

      In the context of IBERGRID, computing centres of Portugal and Spain work together to develop and provide grid, cloud and high performance computing services for the scientific community, which are fully integrated in the European Grid Initiative.
